Yummy Healthy Snacks for Healthy Teeth

The word snack usually conjures up thoughts of treats that are high in sugar and unhealthy other words, junk food. Children are reported to take in about one-forth of their calories from snacks. This is why healthy snacks for kids is important. With adults it may or may not be less, depending on your level of sugar addiction.

Snacking in-between meals is said to be fine, and in fact healthy snacks for weight loss are part of many programs. The not-so-good snacks can increase weight and tooth decay, but healthy and delicious treats can even provide needed daily vitamin and mineral nutrients you or your child needs.

Bad Snacks
Sticky foods, high in sugar, or those that are sucked on stay in the mouth longer and are the type cavity causing bacteria love. Donuts, coffee drinks with whip cream and suckers are examples of these. Studies show if you eat these types of snacks with your meal, they are not as much a problem, as they might be if you eat them by themselves.

Healthy Snacks
Below are just a few examples of nutritious treats. You can come with your own to add to the list,or get more ideas from the internet or friends and relatives.

  • Low fat or light cheese

  • Salt free pretzel sticks

  • Baked tortilla chips, whole-wheat crackers, toasted pita triangles with healthy dip

  • Veggies with hummus or low fat ranch dip

  • Fat free yogurt sweetened with fruit preserves, topped with light or non-fat non-dairy whip cream

  • Hand full of your favorite nuts (if desired mixed with organic dried cranberries)

  • Low glycemic fruit, such as blueberries

  • Chew Cleure Xylitol Chewing Gum after meals or in between meals. You'll have sweet, fresh breath and curb the sugar cravings.

  • The list can go on and on. Get rid of the bad junk food in your kitchen, and replace them with healthy snacks for you and your family. And remember, moderation is always the key.
