The word snack usually conjures up thoughts of treats that are high in sugar and unhealthy fat..in other words, junk food. Children are reported to take in about one-forth of their calories from snacks. This is why healthy snacks for kids is important. With adults it may or may not be less, depending on your level of sugar addiction.
Snacking in-between meals is said to be fine, and in fact healthy snacks for weight loss are part of many programs. The not-so-good snacks can increase weight and tooth decay, but healthy and delicious treats can even provide needed daily vitamin and mineral nutrients you or your child needs.
Sticky foods, high in sugar, or those that are sucked on stay in the mouth longer and are the type cavity causing bacteria love. Donuts, coffee drinks with whip cream and suckers are examples of these. Studies show if you eat these types of snacks with your meal, they are not as much a problem, as they might be if you eat them by themselves.
